Brand Profile:
Saint Cosme - located north of the village of Gigondas - is the most ancient estate in the region. Lying on the site of a Gallo-Roman villa which very probably already had its own vineyard, the estate's existence in 1416 is attested by a document mentioning the granting by Jean de Chalon, Prince of Orange, of "land for the planting of vines on the Saint Cosme slopes." The Barruol's ancestors acquired it in 1570, and at the end of the sixteenth century built a splendid residence over existing cellars. Louis Barruol took over his family's estate in 1990, establishing it as a source of top Gigondas, and adding a négociant arm to the portfolio in 1997.
Wine Advocate:
Score: 90
The 2009 St.-Joseph, which comes from a decomposed granite hillside vineyard in Malleval, has a dense purple color and a big, sweet kiss of crushed rock, blue and black fruits, black olives and earth. It is attractive, medium to full-bodied with loads of fruit, and in keeping with the voluptuous 2009 style. It has taken a while, but one of my favorite producers in the southern Rhone, Louis Barruol of Saint-Cosme, is getting very good publicity just about everywhere I look. It is certainly well-deserved, considering the broad range of wines he produces, from his inexpensive and over-delivering Cotes du Rhones and Vins de Pays, to his top-flight, world-class wines made in Gigondas. This is all a matter of hard work and understanding viticulture and great terroirs.

Plush, with espresso and cocoa powder notes framing the dark plum, crushed blackberry and warm fig sauce flavors. Long and velvety through the full-bodied finish. Drink now through 2016. 350 cases made.

(all petite serine, from Malleval): Deep ruby. Fragrant scents of candied blackberry, creme de cassis and licorice, lifted by pungent notes of violet and black pepper. Lush, intensely flavored and well balanced, offering deep dark berry and cherry flavors and a late kick of smoky minerals. Finishes vibrant and long, with resonating minerality.
